Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². For 72 kg and 1.75 m that is 72 ÷ 3.0625 = 23.5.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
It is a screening tool. Very muscular people may score high, and it does not show where fat is stored. Talk to a doctor for a full assessment.
Does it work for children?
No. Children and teenagers are assessed with age- and sex-specific growth charts, not adult BMI categories.
