How the counts work
Words are separated by spaces and line breaks, so “well-known” counts as one word.
Bytes are counted in UTF-8, the encoding used by most websites and forms. Letters of the English alphabet take 1 byte; Korean, Japanese and Chinese characters take 3.

Does the character count include spaces?
Both are shown: characters with spaces and characters without spaces.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser and the text disappears when you close the page.
Why does a form say my text is too long when the count says it fits?
Some forms limit bytes rather than characters, or count a line break as two characters. Check the byte count as well.
