Which format should I use?
JPG is best for photos: small files, opens everywhere. It has no transparency, so transparent areas turn white.
PNG is best for screenshots, logos and anything with text or a transparent background. It never loses quality, but photo files get large.
WebP gives the smallest files of the three and supports transparency; all modern browsers can open it, though some older programs cannot.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG it came from?
PNG stores every pixel without loss, which suits graphics but makes photos large. For photos, JPG or WebP is usually the better choice.
What happens to a transparent background when I convert to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so those areas are filled with white. Keep PNG or WebP if you need the transparency.
Can I convert iPhone HEIC photos?
Only in browsers that can open HEIC, such as Safari on iPhone and Mac. In other browsers, change the iPhone camera setting to “Most Compatible” to save JPG directly.
