Choosing quality and format
A quality of 70–80% is a good balance for photos: the file shrinks a lot while the difference is hard to see.
WebP usually gives the smallest files and is supported by all modern browsers. Choose JPEG when the image must open everywhere, such as in older software.
Note that converting a PNG with transparency to JPEG fills the transparent area with white.
Frequently asked questions
Will compressing reduce image quality?
Slightly, depending on the quality setting. At 70–80% the change is barely visible for most photos, while the file can shrink by 50–90%.
Why did my file get bigger?
Images that are already well compressed, or small PNG graphics, may not shrink further. In that case the original is the better file to keep.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Compression uses your browser’s built-in image engine, so the photos stay on your device.
Is the location and camera data removed?
Yes. Re-encoding the image does not copy EXIF metadata such as GPS location, which also helps privacy.
