How to Split, Delete and Reorder PDF Pages (Free, No Upload)

Learn which free tool to use to split, delete, reorder or rotate PDF pages, how page ranges like 1, 3, 5-7 work, and how to do it all in your browser.

A PDF often needs a little cleanup before you can send it. A scanned contract may have a blank back page after every sheet. A 40-page report might have only three pages your colleague needs. A form you scanned in a hurry might have pages out of order or turned sideways. None of this means rebuilding the document. You only need to move, remove or pull out the right pages.

This guide covers students, office workers, landlords, job applicants and anyone else who handles PDFs. It explains which tool fits which job, how to type page ranges correctly, and how to make each change step by step. All the Deftivo tools below run in your web browser, so your files stay on your device and are never uploaded to a server.

Which tool for which job?

The PDF page tools can look alike, but each one does a different job. Start by deciding what should happen to the pages.

What you want Tool to use What you get
Take some pages out to use as a new file Split PDF A new PDF (or several) containing only the pages you chose
Get rid of blank or unwanted pages Delete PDF pages The same PDF, minus the pages you listed
Put pages in a different order Organize PDF The same pages, rearranged, with the option to rotate or drop some
Fix pages that appear sideways or upside down Rotate PDF The same PDF with the chosen pages turned

A useful rule of thumb: split when you want to keep a few pages, delete when you want to throw away a few pages, and organize when you need to see the pages to decide. Split and delete can reach the same result from opposite directions. If you want 2 pages out of 30, split is quicker. If you want 28 out of 30, delete is quicker.

Understanding page range syntax

Most of these tools ask you to type page numbers instead of clicking each page. The format is simple once you’ve seen it:

  • A single number means one page: 4 is page 4.
  • Commas separate items: 1, 3, 5 means pages 1, 3 and 5.
  • A hyphen means “from … to”: 5-7 means pages 5, 6 and 7.
  • A hyphen with nothing after it means “to the end”: 8- means page 8 through the last page.

You can mix these in one line. 1, 3, 5-7 selects pages 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7. 1-3, 5, 8- selects pages 1 to 3, page 5, and everything from page 8 onward.

One important detail: these numbers are the page’s position in the file, not the number printed on the page. If a report has a cover and a table of contents before “page 1”, the page printed as “1” might be the third page of the PDF. Always count from the first page of the file.

How to split a PDF (extract pages)

Use Split PDF when you want a smaller file made from part of a larger one, such as a single chapter, one invoice from a batch, or only the signed pages of a contract.

  1. Select or drop one PDF file.
  2. Choose how to split it. There are three options:
    • Extract pages puts every page you list into one new PDF.
    • Each range as a file makes a separate PDF for each range you type. For example, 1-3, 5, 8- would produce three files.
    • Every page turns each page into its own PDF.
  3. Type the page numbers, such as 1-3, 5, 8-.
  4. Press Split PDF and download the result. If more than one file is created, they arrive together as one ZIP file, which you can open with your computer’s built-in unzip feature.

How to delete pages from a PDF

Use Delete PDF pages to remove blank scans, duplicate pages, old cover sheets or anything else you don’t want to share.

  1. Select or drop one or more PDF files. The page count appears next to each file, so you can check that you picked the right document.
  2. Type the pages to delete, for example 1, 3, 5-7.
  3. Press Delete pages.
  4. Download the edited PDF. If you edited several files, they come as one ZIP.

If you process several files at once, keep in mind that the same page numbers apply to each one. This is handy when every file has the same layout, like a batch of scanned forms that each end with a blank page.

How to reorder PDF pages

Use Organize PDF when you need to see the pages. It’s the best choice when a scan came out in the wrong order or you’re not sure which pages you have.

  1. Select or drop a PDF. Thumbnails (small preview images) of every page appear.
  2. Drag pages into a new order. On a phone, use the arrows to move a page up or down.
  3. Use ↻ to rotate a page and ✕ to leave a page out of the final file.
  4. Press Save PDF.

Because you can rotate and remove pages here too, Organize PDF can handle a messy document in one pass. The other tools are faster when you already know the page numbers.

How to rotate PDF pages

Use Rotate PDF for pages that open sideways or upside down, which is common with scans and phone photos saved as PDF.

  1. Select or drop one or more PDF files.
  2. Choose 90° right, 180° or 90° left.
  3. Leave the page box empty to rotate every page, or type only the pages that need turning, such as 2, 4-6.
  4. Press Rotate PDF and download the result.

If a page is upside down, choose 180°. If it’s lying on its side, look at which way the top of the page points and turn it the other way. If you pick the wrong direction, rotate the page again. The page content stays the same.

Tips and pitfalls

  • Check the page count first. A range like 12-15 in a 10-page file won’t do what you expect. Confirm how many pages the file has before you type.
  • Delete from the original numbering. When you list several pages to delete, use their numbers in the original file. You don’t need to adjust for pages that will disappear earlier in the document.
  • Do one job at a time when page numbers matter. If you delete pages and then rotate, the page numbers will have shifted. Check the new file before typing numbers for the next step.
  • Keep your original. These tools create a new file for you to download. Keep the original until you’ve opened the result and confirmed it looks right.
  • Rename the download. A clear name like “Lease_signed_pages.pdf” saves confusion later, especially after splitting into several files.
  • Look out for printed page numbers. As mentioned above, the number printed at the bottom of a page may not match its position in the file.

FAQ

Are my PDF files uploaded anywhere?

No. Deftivo’s PDF tools process files inside your web browser, on your own device. The file isn’t sent to a server, which is useful for contracts, IDs, medical records and other private documents.

What’s the difference between splitting and deleting pages?

Splitting creates a new file from the pages you choose to keep. Deleting removes the pages you list and keeps everything else. Both can produce the same result, so pick whichever needs fewer page numbers.

Why did I get a ZIP file instead of a PDF?

When a tool creates more than one PDF, such as splitting into several ranges or editing several files at once, the files are bundled into a single ZIP to make downloading easier. Open the ZIP with your computer’s or phone’s built-in extractor to get the individual PDFs.

Can I reorder and rotate pages at the same time?

Yes. Organize PDF lets you drag pages into a new order, rotate individual pages with ↻ and remove pages with ✕ before saving. If you only need to turn pages and already know their numbers, Rotate PDF is quicker.
